Local 558 History The very first IBEW Local #1 was established in 1891 in a room above Stolley's Dance Hall in St. Louis, Missouri. The number IBEW 558 was first allocated in 1907 to a Local in Tamaqua, Pennsylvania, which went defunct one year later in December of 1907. This same number was re-assigned to the Florence, Alabama Local on February 28, 1918. Source: IBEW Proceedings of the 30th Convention, Kansas City, Missouri, September 1974. In 1918 IBEW, Local Union 558 was located on Tennessee Street in Florence, Alabama above the Pool Room and later relocated to Court Street in Florence, Alabama above the old Lamar Furniture Store. In 1938 Local Union 558 moved to 3325 Jackson Highway in Sheffield, Alabama and purchased the building in 1940. The Local Union remained at this location until January 29, 2007 when the Local moved to 1803 E. 17th Street in Sheffield, Alabama. This building was purchased on March 30, 2005 and completely remodeled. The North Alabama Electrical Joint Apprentice Training School also moved from its previous location at 1010 Plant Street in Sheffield at the same time. They are now located in the same building with the Local Union in a completely remodeled Apprenticeship Training Facility.
